A Town Named for Its Riverbank Elevation
Bluffton's name comes directly from the river bluffs along the Wabash River near where the town was founded in 1838, the same year it became the seat of newly organized Wells County. Early settlers Dr. Joseph Knox (1829) and Allen Norcross (1831) had already established cabins on opposite banks of the Wabash nearby.
