The Opening: A Clearing That Became a Town
Long before it was platted in 1869, Huntertown was known simply as 'The Opening' -- a natural forest clearing along the Coldwater Road where William T. Hunter settled around 1837. The Perry Centre Seminary operated here from 1856 until 1861, when its entire faculty and adult students enlisted in the Union Army.
Drainage on Ground That Grew Up Slowly
Because Huntertown didn't formally incorporate until 1966, much of its older housing was built without the coordinated stormwater planning that came later, often relying on natural drainage across the same clay and clay-loam soils found throughout Allen County. Homes from that pre-incorporation era can have less consistent grading and drainage than the subdivisions built as the town's population grew toward its current 11,097.
